John (Johannes) Schuffert, Jr. was severely wounded at the battle of Ramsour's Mill during the American Revolution while fighting for the British Army. He died of his wounds several years after the battle. His brother Martin was killed in the same battle.

The family spelling of the name changed after this generation to Shuford.
