Arthur D. "Delaine" Hooper, 80, of Hiawatha, died Wednesday afternoon, March 24, 2004, at his home.

Delaine was born August 19, 1923, near White Cloud, one of three children born to Arthur B. and Edna Marie Taylor Hooper and had lived in the northeast Kansas area all of his life. He grew up on a farm near White Cloud and later graduated from high school there with the class of 1940.

Delaine was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He returned from the service where he farmed prior to working for Kimmel Oil in Hiawatha and later for a number of years as a mechanic for Leman Motors, also of Hiawatha. 

In later years, he was a tire repairman for Bruning Tire Company, Hiawatha, retiring in 1977 Mr. Hooper was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Hiawatha. He also was a member of the Homer-White Post #66, Hiawatha American Legion. 

He married Mary Katherine Hayes, June 12, 1944, at Hiawatha. They made their home near White Cloud until moving to Hiawatha in 1958. They sold their home last fall and made their home at the Maple Grove Senior Apartments in Hiawatha. 

She survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters Linda Stich and husband Ron of Topeka, Wanda Jenkins and husband Bob of Troy, Daughter in law Angie Foster, also of Topeka A sister June Hunker of Berkley, Michigan; 8 grandchildren: Todd Hooper, Overland Park, KS Randy Stich, Topeka Melissa and Wayne McCall, Topeka Taira and Matt Crocker, Naperville, IL Katy Stich, Topeka Travis & Rachel Jenkins, Fairfax, MO Michael Jenkins, Bethany Jenkins, both of Troy; 3 great-grandchildren: Jessica & Gregory McCall, both of Topeka Madeline Crocker of Naperville, IL

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Gary K. Hooper December 21, 1996; and a brother Clyde Hooper in 1997.

Funeral services are planned for 10:30 Saturday morning, March 27, at the First Christian Church of Hiawatha. Pastor Bill Worcester will officiate. Interment will follow at the Olive Branch Cemetery, White Cloud. Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Friday Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund or the NEK Multi County Hospice both of which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
